If you look at a human spine diagram or vertebral column illustration, you will see a lot of different things. Some of them may be strange or unfamiliar to you. Here is a brief discussion of what you will see, in hopes of giving you a basic understanding.

Your back bones are called vertebrae and there are thirty three of them in a normal person. The top section of bones in the column runs from the head to the mid back. This is called the cervical region and is most often associated with the neck.

There are seven vertebrae in the cervical region of the vertebral column. In many illustrations you will see them numbered C1 through C7. C1 is the very top one, and C7 is the last. “C” stands for cervical. Cervical vertebrae are smallest and lightest in this area.

The mid region of the vertebral column is the thoracic area. The thoracic region contains twelve vertebrae and they are numbered T1 through T12, and T stands for thoracic. These vertebrae are also referred to as dorsal vertebrae. The thoracic area is a very strong point of your back. This is because you have the rib cage lending it support.

If you look at the bottom part of the spinal illustration, you will see the lumbar region. There are five bones and they are numbered from L1 to L5. The lumbar region contains the strongest of all the vertebrae, as they support the most weight.

After the lumbar region is the sacral area with its five vertebrae. However, they are fused when you become mature. At the very end is the coccyx or the tailbone. The coccyx usually has four fused tail vertebrae.

Between the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae are disks. Disks are made from a soft gelatinous substance that serves more than one purpose. The disks allow the vertebrae to move and glide and provide flexibility to the entire column of vertebrae.

Disks are also important because they act as shock absorbers for the bones. They protect the bones from rubbing together and causing problems. This is why back problems involving disks can be painful and troublesome.

The main purpose of the vertebral column is to support and house the spinal canal. The spinal canal is formed by hollow areas in the vertebrae. An entire series of nerves and blood vessels flows through your spinal area.

Nerves in the spinal region run from the brain to all areas of the body. They help to nourish body regions and also allow information to flow from one area to another. If there is a problem or misalignment with vertebrae, it can cause many problems in different body regions.

In conclusion, your spinal column contains thirty three bones that are known as vertebrae. You have five regions and they are the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccyx. These bones are cushioned by soft material called disks. The structure houses and supports your spinal canal. Through this area nerves and blood vessels serve all parts of your body. This is why it is important to understand a human spine diagram.

Spinal cord compression is an emergency and painful condition during which there is pressure on the spinal cord due to a tumor resulting in a lot of pain and trauma. While the spinal cord comprises of nerve bundles running down the vertebrae’s hollow part, the vertebrae and inter-vertebral disks protect it from outside by providing the shock absorption.

What causes it?

It is quite possible that something pressing on the spinal cord with a lot of force, could cause damage and lead to the loss of functionality of the nerves. Tumor is one of the several reasons this could happen. The tumor which causes the compression may lead to the situation either directly or indirectly depending upon where it originates. The severity also varies with patients in some cases experiencing motor and sensory loss. Apart from cancerous causes, the fracture of vertebrae, dislocation or malformation could lead to the problem with nerves of the spinal cord too. Undue pressure on the spinal cord could also take place due to hematoma, a condition caused by blood around the spinal cord. The blood flow caused due to defective blood vessels could also lead to this situation. Similarly, ligaments could cause compression as well especially after an individual has suffered from back injury.

Mild and severe symptoms

The spinal cord compression could lead to symptoms that include loss of rectal sensation as well as urinary retention and hesitancy in some cases. Weakness in legs and back pain could also be experienced during this medical condition. Depending on the area of the compression, it is also quite possible that the individual loses control of arms and legs. Since the nerves of spinal cord control functionality of muscles, the compression could affect the person a lot. It is to be noted that since, the compression is likely to affect all the nerves below the compression area, higher the compression on the spinal cord, more would be the severity and symptoms observed in the person. Mild symptoms of compression could include general muscle fatigue along with discomfort in the back. There could be a funny tingling sensation in the muscles. Muscles spasms, bladder control and numbness are some of the other symptoms. In severe cases, even paralysis in the patient cannot be ruled out.

How to respond

The compression of spinal cord and the pain therein can be relieved by administering corticosteriords. Even surgical decompression or radiotherapy is employed to treat the patient. It is to be noted that radiotherapy doesn’t work in case of tumors which are known to resist it. In such cases, surgical procedures are employed. Those patients who are suffering from lymphoma, lung cancer, prostate or breast cancer might witness its metastasizing to the spine. MRI is often used to scan and detect the area where compression has been formed. This oncological emergency is quite a common complication of the nerves and could leave the individual with permanent defects in some cases. Impotence is another effect of the compression. Similarly paraplegia could also manifest within few days depending on how much the compression has progressed.

A spinal diagram is the best way to understand your spinal cord. Spinal cord is the main part of central nervous system and distributes different nerves from our body to the brain. The spinal cord is located inside the spine and is protected with their fluid called cerebral spinal fluid. The cerebral spinal fluid is capable of providing protection like a cushion to this delicate cord.
The spinal cord itself consists of millions of nerves and the communication between the cord and neurons takes place with electric signals. There are several nerves inside the spinal cord and they are grouped into ascending and descending tracts. A spine diagram will explain to you about each part off your spine very clearly.

• Vertebra – Vertebra are the blocks of bones that make up the spine. These are real tough bones that are also very chunky. If you can see your back in a mirror, you are most likely to see the bulges of vertebra on your back. There is a scientific name for the same. It is called spinous processes among doctors. When you look at the spine diagram, you will see that vertebra is separated from one another. Vertebra is separated by discs that also act as shock absorbers of spine. These are called spinal discs.

• Spinal Cord – The duty of spine is to protect the spinal cord which is the communication system between the brain and organs in human body. The communication is done to nervous impulses and the nickname of spinal cord is ‘control nerve.’ The primary role of spine is to protect the cord and this is why vertebra is a very strong bone.

• We often hear about ‘disc slipping.’ These are the spinal discs that can be easily spotted on a spine diagram. Many people are often worried about the disc slipping but in reality, spinal discs are extremely strong and chances for them to slip are very rare. Disc bulges, as well call the slipping of spinal cord is an issue that most of us face with aging. However, this has nothing to do with healthy people and this health condition is extremely rare among youngsters.
A spine diagram will give you a better idea about the functions of your spine. If you authored some sort of your regular feelings on your spine, this diagram will help you to spot the probable cause and resolve the same. Even if you are a healthy person it is going to help you to have a better understanding about your spine which will help you to maintain your health in a better way. You can also educate your children about the functions of spine and how to take care of the same. It is wonderful to know how spinal cord functions and how our spine protects it. So next time when someone is complaining to you about back pain, you probably know the reason because you already have a spine diagrm.

The spine is the building mechanical block that helps a body function in movement and reflex action. Some people have been unfortunate and have lost this inability causing paralysis of various degrees to the human body. It is not easy to imagine what this cord looks like because your typical spine diagram may have it appear as something much larger than it actually is. Realistically the cord has the same diameter of a human finger. Isn’t that too small one may ask? Small but very powerful is the creation within each body. A spine is based on a relationship of neuron signals which move from the brain to the body and from sensory signals which more from the body to the rest of the brain. It is important to understand just how valuable the spine is, and what capabilities it can hold.

The anatomy of the spine consists of many nerve fibers which are carrying electrical information either upwards or downwards depending on which action the body is responding to. These move from the brain to the limbs, organs of the body and trunk. The spine diagram is a magnified look at a real life spine, and is bale to clearly show the various nerves, vertebrae and discs. There are four different kinds of nerves which exit different levels of the spine. Firstly there is the cervical nerves which supply motion to the arms, neck and upper trunk. Then there are the Thoracic nerves which are in the upper back and provide motion for the abdomen and trunk. The third type is the Lumbar and Sacral nerves which are responsible for the motion of the legs, the bladder, the bowel and sexual organs. This set is found in the lower back area of the body.

When the spine under goes trauma of a high impact, this automatically has an effect on the spine of the body and could result in many unforeseen issues. There are millions who have lost part or all of their nervous system capabilities and find themselves confined to wheel chairs or beds because of the inability for the spine to respond. These nerves of the spine, can be easily explored with a concise spine diagram since there are different nerves at different levels of the spinal cord. Within the spine there is a cushioning that is supplied, known as the Cerebral Spinal Fluid. This clear fluid is what protects the spine nerves from any banging and trauma caused in accidents, falls, etc.

Extreme damage to the nervous system can very rarely be fixed; it is an electrical system of interdependent and intertwined nerve fibers causing a very big challenge to nervous system physicians. Because it is the pathway for information transmission at times only particular reflexes could be affected by a particular trauma. It becomes difficult to understand which nerves have been affected and to what extend the damage goes. The nerves of the spine are extremely sensitive to any trauma, causing major pain to the body and this is why even a night with a bad pillow will get you wearing a neck brace the next day.

A spine diagram is a medical picture used to study and demonstrate the structure of the spine and all its components. If you paid attention in biology class and then again in medical school, you will know your spine is a column made up of 24 vertebrae, the sacrum, coccyx, discs and all the interconnecting spinal nerves. In the spinal canal is the spinal cord. It is a complex part of your body but comes under stress and strain as it holds your back in place. If you did not pay attention in class, the Internet has made it so easy to beam up a spine diagram in a matter of seconds.

X-rays, CT scans and MRI are a means of providing doctors and other medical professionals with an actual spine diagram for the purpose of diagnosing a medical condition. If a person suffers injury to the neck or head, a spinal cord injury is suspected until it is ruled out. X-rays will be taken to investigate any damage to the vertebrae and an MRI and/or CT scan will be performed to investigate damage to the spinal cord itself. The three methods will provide the medical team with a spine diagram and allow the correct diagnosis to be made. Please note, x-rays are excellent at showing damage to the bones, known as hard tissue, but the spinal cord, which is soft tissue, will only show damage through a CT scan or MRI.

With spine diagrams so readily available, and in color to make them easily understood, it allows a person with back pain the opportunity to study the area of concern and research the cause and effect of the pain. There are interactive spine diagrams on the Internet that allow the user to click on a part of the spine and find out everything their is to know about it. It will note possible causes of pain or discomfort, types of injuries that may cause damage to that part of the spine and methods to alleviate pain and discomfort and maybe even fix what is wrong. The information given may also recommend exercises or medication that may help. Having access to such information will allow you the opportunity to make yourself better understood when explaining a problem to your doctor. It will help in understanding of what your doctor is telling you. One word of caution, however, always consult your doctor whenever back injuries or mysterious pain appears. Self diagnosis can be helpful but unless you are a medical professional your diagnosis could be way off base and any remedies tried may only make the problem worse.

A spine diagram is useful for not only medical professionals but the lay person who wishes to find out more about an important part of their body. Knowing how the spine works may help you to avoid improper execution of tasks that will damage your spine. If you have not checked out a spine diagram in a while or ever for that matter, beam one up and take a look at how complex and vulnerable it can be.

A cervical spine diagram is a medical picture which is very important for doctors and other medical professionals to go ahead with the medical treatments or operations. These medical pictures show exactly what the problem is with the bones in that region. Before we look into this, let us have a look at some of the details about this region of the body.

The cervical spine diagram shows us the region of our body which is made up of nearly thirty one bones. These bones are joined to each other with the help of ligaments. The whole back portion of your body is covered by this bone and it starts right from the neck to the lower back of your body. The bones at the different areas in your back have different names and the one near your neck is called the cervical spine.

There are basically seven such bones in the bodies of vertebrates and that includes human beings too. These medical pictures help the practitioners in performing their duties and there are different doctors and medical professionals who use this for different diseases and deformities treatments. When one looks at these medical pictures, one can really make out as to what the conditions of the bones in that particular area are. The ordinary person may not be able to find that out but a medical practitioner would be able to do it very easily. If a doctor is treating his patient, then the magnitude of the treatment is dependent on these medical pictures. Sometimes the patient might not be aware of what the doctor his doing with his back. During these times, the doctor will show these medical pictures to the patient to let him know the condition of his back and also how the medicines and treatment would have a positive effect on them.

One of the most flexible parts in the human body is the cervical area and because of this flexibility, it is also the most unstable part of the body. Because of this instability, this area is prone to many problems and damages. It needs proper treatment to cure these areas in case of any problems and the medical pictures come in very handy to get the thing done in the most effective way possible.

All these years, these medical pictures are going through lot of transformations and updates so that the treatment of these areas becomes as effective as possible. The diagnosis of these areas are becoming easier and sooner because of these medical pictures. These pictures are not only used by the doctors for treating the patients but also used as a tool to educate the patients about their back and how should they go about taking care of it.

The cervical spine diagram was made with the help of old fashioned techniques before. Now, new ways of producing these medical pictures are coming out which are not only very detailed and clear but are also made very quickly when compared to the older method. These methods ensured that the patients are not only treated properly but the treatment is done very quickly as well.

The spine, also called the vertebral column, is consist of the sacrum, the coccyx, the intervertebral discs and of course, the 24 vertebrae. It is separated by the spinal discs and in its spinal canal is the spinal cord. Sounds very technical? Well, there is no other way to put it. But to make it easier for you to understand and imagine, the use of the various views of a spine diagram will be a big help.

The internet has truly made the world a lot easier. When before, we will need to pay high doctor’s rates or professional fees just to find out the symptoms, causes and remedies for illnesses, even just the simplest ones, it is no longer the case. Now, people can easily browse in the internet for the symptoms they have and already learn what it is that they have. They can even self-medicate, for the simple sickness, as taken from the information provided by the internet. It is also in the internet that these carious spine diagrams can be found available in various positions and views for better understanding and appreciation of the layman. The advantages of being able to understand and see the parts of the spine in a diagram is that you will be able to pinpoint or determine which parts are painful or problematic, as the case may be, and be able to inform your doctor about it immediately. You will no longer have a problem explaining since you somehow have an idea already which parts need attention.

In a side view of a spine diagram, what will be immediately seen are the cervical vertebrae, the thoracic vertebrae, the lumbar vertebrae, the sacrum and the sacroiliac joint. This is the most basic spine diagram that is available. A cervical spine diagram on the other hand will be able to give the viewer an idea of how the spine is connected tot he skull and therefore , the brain.
